Install GooglePlus Comments Widget on custom Blogger Templates

Blogger recently implemented Google Plus comments on their Blogger platform, and we know that many bloggers like you have gone ahead and implemented this new functionality to your blogger blogs. But a lot of our readers have been asking us how to add Google Plus comments, or Google Plus comments API  to Blogger custom templates? This feature turns on and off smoothly for default templates. But most bloggers don't use default templates. For them, we have compiled this short tutorial on how to implement Google Plus commenting system on custom Blogger Templates.

Why enable Google Plus comments?

Google Plus comments are much more flexible, and allow you to keep track of your conversations better. They also help keep the discussions organized. Besides, readers can share their comments, or make comments on your Google Plus posts to make them appear on your blog. This expands your reach as your followers' extended circles can see your content too.

Although there's some controversy regarding the usefulness of this commenting system versus the harms (something we discussed at length in our last post), the choice is really yours. But if you do want to implement this feature on your custom Blogger templates, then here's how you can do that.

Enabling Google Plus comments

To start off, first log into your Blogger account, and click on the blog you want to add Google Plus comments to. Now, click on the Google+ option on the left sidebar. You must be the admin of a blog to be able to view this option.

Now, you need to upgrade our account, and integrate it with Google Plus if you haven't already done so. You will get a "Get Started" button if you haven't. Follow the simple instructions, and then move on to the next step.

Check the option that says Use Google+ Comments on this Blog - For default templates, this is pretty much all you need to do.

For custom templates, here's what you need to do;

• Click on the Template tab from the left sidebar, and then click on Edit HTML.


• From the code editor, press Ctrl + F, and search for 'threaded_comments'

• You should see the following lines of code

Take care not to make a mistake while editing. And it would be a good idea to backup your template (Backup/Restore option at the top-right), just in case.

Some Disadvantages of enabling Google+ comments on Blogger?

The Google Plus comments integration with Blogger is turning quite some heads now, and a lot of bloggers have gone ahead and implemented it. This seems to be one of the biggest improvements in Blogger over the recent past. And at first glance, it looks pretty slick, with a clean and solid implementation. It makes things really easy, especially for bloggers who can track the conversation more easily. At the same time, readers can contribute right from Google Plus, without needing to open the blog. However, upon closer inspection, it seems that the new implementation isn't without its flaws.

It has been some days since this feature came out - plenty of time for us to play with it. And there do seem to be some disadvantages of using this new commenting system. These might manifest themselves later on, if not immediately.

Disadvantages of using Google+ comments on blogger

Firstly, to use this feature, users need to use their Google account ID, which can be a bit of a problem for readers who are using alternatives.



But the real problem lies in the fact that this commenting system is dependent upon the URL of your blog. If you change the URL, for example when you are migrating to another domain or re-branding, you will not be able to migrate these comments, and they will be deleted! Unlike Facebook Comment API, Google comments aren't stored on any app accounts. This means that migration is not an option, and that, you'll lost all your comments should any such thing happen.



Another big disadvantage is the increase in Page Load Speed. It takes some time before all the data is fetched from Google. Usually, this isn't noticeable, but try loading your blog on a slow dial-up connection, and you will see those comments appear much later.



Some people have also reported that the comment statistics are no longer accurate (or sometimes visible).

How To Create a Google+ Page?

Just Like Facebook Like Pages, Google+ has introduced the fan, followers or +1 pages for web masters thus providing them better option of driving traffic to themselves by updating their readers through Google Plus. Google+ Pages are now also available for local business purposes. Soon you will be able to submit your Site or Blog RSS Feed to Google+ to automatically update your readers whenever you publish a new post. Create a Google Plus Page

1. Go To Google Plus Pages
2. Choose Local Product or Brand as your category

 

       3.   Fill up the details with your website title and URL.

The next step would be to inform all your friends in your Google+ profile to join your Fan page. Simply follow the easy instructions that may follow up. Replace Blogger Profile with Google+ Profile

Finally Google+ now jumped to Blogger. Blogger team announced yesterday that now you can Use your public Google+ profile on all your existing BlogSpot blogs. Upon switching your default Blogger profile will be replaced with Google+ profile and all your posts, comments and Author profile widget will be redirected to your Google Plus profile. Your blog pseudonym will be replaced with your common name. Your blog photo and info will be replaced with that in Google plus. This option works at present with Blogger in draft and after few weeks it will work on blogger.com too.

 

The three main features that this shifting offers are:

• You will get access to upcoming Google+ features on Blogger
• your social connections (friends) will see your posts in their Google search results page with an annotation that tells them that you've shared the post. Thus increasing your blog traffic! See below:

• Most importantly it would give you one Unique identity. All your Google Accounts will now use one common name. Your Common is the nickname that you chose on Google+.

Important Notes

However this shift may seem exciting but you need to first note these important points:

• Upon switching to your Google+ profile,you will have only 30 days to revert back to your old blogger profile. After the time limit is crossed, your Blogger profile data will be deleted permanently.
• Information on your Blogger profile won't be transferred to your Google+ profile, so you must manually copy your blogger profile data to Google+ before making the automatic switch.

Google Plus Posts are now crawled by Google Robots!

I had heard that Google will soon crawl data shared on their newly born Google+ social network in order to bring a new change in their search pattern. Amazingly just today I searched for one of my posts and I was shocked to see that even my Google+ status post appeared in the search results page. This shows how significant role will G+ plus play in days to come. I will highly suggest that you +1'd all your posts and add a Google Plus badge to increase the number of your followers because this new sharing +1 button has a lot to disclose for Search engine Optimization experts and before its too late you must start making good use of it. I had expected this to come after the introduction of +snippets. Please see the screenshots of the SERPs that I observed:

 

 

You can clearly see my Google+ post appearing just after my main blogs post page. I must assure you that I received this result while I was not online on G+ i.e I didn't log into Google Plus. I then further investigated to see how the results will appear when you log into your Google+ account. I received this result:

The only difference that you would see is that my profile image is appearing below my blog link indicating that I have recommended/voted the post.

As you can see Google robots are indexing the links shared on your Google+ profiles along with the Google+ post URL. Which means that both your blog link and Profile Post URL are being indexed and displayed in search results. I must say it can turn out as a great traffic boosting gift for webmasters with large G+ following. In order to increase your Google+ profile you must take these steps urgently:

What are Google +Snippets and Inline annotations?

Finally Google+ released the most awaited feature and that was sharing site content with your circles. Now whenever your +1 a page you will be provided with a share on Google+ option, by choosing which you can post on your profile a thumbnail image, description and link to that website. It works similar to Facebook like button now. This new option is named +snippets. Google released this new feature just few hours ago and they have also released Google+ inline Inline annotations which are simple display of your friend's profile images next to the +1 button. What are +Snippets?

Google+ Invites Limited to 150 Per User

I just came to know that now all Google+ users are restricted to 150 invites only. You can at most invite 150 people on a single Google Plus account. Google+ now also provides you with a unique invite share URL or link that you can post anywhere to invite friends directly. This is the same invite link that is blocked by Facebook. You can find this unique URL on your Google+ homepage towards the right sidebar under "Send invitations - 150 left" Upon clicking it you can easily copy the invite URL and share it with friends on forums, blogs and social networks to invite more and more people. You can invite people by email or by a share link as shown below,

 

 

You can clearly see that only 150 sign ups can be made per account. So invite only close friends and use the limit carefully. This is done so that the social network may not become a spam spot or adventure park where anyone would come and go. Only active social people are allowed to join Google Plus. Since we still have 150 invites left so you can post your email ID's below for an invite as we have enough accounts and the limit does not bound us. :p

Facebook is Blocking Google+ Invites: The Social Media War Begins

Just Tuesday Google spokesperson Randall Safara posted a video on Google+ that showed that Facebook is limiting the spread of Google+ invites on their news Feed. He created a video to show the evidence. Amazingly all status updates showed up fine except the Google Plus Invite link which did not showed up on his friends news feed. Even in May, a controversy erupted where a PR firm exposed Facebook involved in publishing anti-Google stories in the press. So far Google+ traffic chart is going really fine and much more is expected from this new social media giant. Only time will tell if it succeeds in capturing a major portions of FB's market control. I personally don't like Facebook for destroying the social life style with its poor privacy issues and I would always thumbs up any Google+ moves. What are your views on this latest development?
